SBS Indonesian Interviews Krack Studio’s Sukma Smita on Pasar Malam

In an interview with Anne Parisianne of SBS Indonesian, Sukma Smita, co-founder and one of the program directors of Krack Printmaking Collective, shares the ideas behind Pasar Malam: Contemporary Printmaking from Indonesia and Australia, presented at Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre in Perth from 9 May to 8 August 2026.

Reflecting on the cultural significance of the night market, Sukma explores how this familiar social space brings together stories, nostalgia, entertainment and everyday encounters across Indonesia and Australia. The exhibition brings together 15 artists, including nine Indonesian and six Australian artists, through large-scale screenprints and an experimental three-dimensional work.

Sukma also discusses the importance of presenting contemporary Indonesian art beyond familiar stereotypes, creating opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and building connections through artistic practice. From the exhibition’s opening celebrations, featuring karaoke and live performances, to its broader role in fostering cultural dialogue, Pasar Malam demonstrates how art can create meaningful encounters across communities and borders.
