Jumaadi
Jumaadi’s work is inspired by a poem called Prajurit Jaga Malam (Night Watchman) by Chairil Anwar. It was written in 1948 while Indonesia fought for independence from the Dutch. Jumaadi is interested in the line Waktu jalan. Aku tidak tahu apa nasib waktu? (Times are changing, but I don’t know what changes are coming).
Jumaadi has often made work inspired by Chairi: “It never has direct translation to the work, it is more like a parallel concern. Or at best, a starting point.”
Jumaadi is an Indonesian born, Sydney-based artist working across a range of media including drawing, painting, installation and performance.
